Male, Gorham/South Portland

I'm currently a sophomore at the University of Southern Maine with a major in Media Writing. I write for my music blog at http://soloudinhere.wordpress.com/ and occasionally the USM Free Press. I also book bands for concerts on the USM Gorham campus.

Sam pretty much hit the nail on the head about the Portland Point. Must be tons of fun watching the Wordpress Blog Stats on that one...

And about my So Loud In Here blog...I felt like I was losing direction with it, and at the same time I was getting really busy with school work (this is around March or April). Plus I find myself working better when I'm on some sort of team or writing for another publication. I still blog, but more collaboratively now. I'm doing the video game blog above and my band's blog as well, which discusses local music amongst pop culture and the music industry. It gets updated a lot so check it here: http://tstl.wordpress.com/

I'm not declaring So Loud dead yet. I just need a good solid direction for it before I start posting again. Maybe I should start contributing to MaineToday again... Chris Brown said I was doing a good job with that.

The South China/Jakob Battick show had a great turn-out with 50+ people. It looks like my shows in Gorham keep growing and growing. You can view some photos from the show on today's Hilly Town entry: http://hillytown.com/news/south-china-jakob-battick-usm-gorham-show-photos/

Just got The Scrapes on for the 2/27 show. Trying to get Full Contact Kitty as well, but may end up with Huak. Who knows.

Exactly my thoughts. Have some other shows in development:
2/27 - Rotundo Sealeg, two more TBA
3/7 - Adam Kurtz (Kurtz & Mann), two more TBA
4/22 - Firepalooza: Better Than, two more TBA

Shows at USM Gorham (first up: South China and Jakob Battick)

January 23, 2009 by soloudinmaine

The USM Gorham campus is fairly disconnected from the Portland music scene if you don't have a car, and I fall under that category. To fill this musical void on the campus, I started booking bands for weekly concerts in Gorham.

On Saturday, January 31st at 8pm in the Hastings Formal Lounge at USM Gorham, I will be hosting USM's first concert: South China (Biddeford) and Jakob Battick (Gorham/Bangor). South China is a husband and wife folk duo who were originally apart of Brown Bird (Peapod Recordings). Jakob Battick is a good friend of mine who writes beautiful and dreamy folk songs. He's currently transitioning from an acoustic to electric set, and it's exciting to see new interpretations of his older songs.

This show is free and all-ages. Everyone is welcome to attend! I made a Facebook event for it right here. I hope for this to become a bigger thing for the campus and encourage more students to get involved in the Greater Portland music community. Eventually I'd like to bring in bigger bands from out-of-state, but there's a lot of work to do before any of that happens...

If you'd like to stay updated on upcoming shows at USM, just keep an eye on this page. I'm hoping to bring Rotundo Sealeg, Math the Band, and Adam Kurtz along with many other local musicians to Gorham as well. As for booking inquiries, I've been getting a lot of requests this semester and there aren't too many doable weekends this semester, so realistically I'll only be able to do 4 to 6 concerts (can't hold ones on school nights!)

So yeah, just wanted to let you guys know about this. Only a 20 or so minute drive from Portland and all of the shows will be free!

I'll one up on Nat Baldwin. Missed his show in late December unfortunately. He also played with Department of Eagles last year. Check out his Daytrotter session here: http://daytrotter.com/article/1312/nat-baldwin Very unique folk music.

As far as non-local goes Department of Eagles' In Ear Park took the cake for me. Of Montreals' Skeletal Lamping was pretty awesome too. It got a lot of mixed reviews but from my own strange and skewered perception, the entire album as a whole made sense to me.

You can download the Mt. Moon album for free right here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?yemx10zhuwb
It is completely worth the download time.

Just a few of my local favorites:
Metal Feathers - Self Titled (I think?)
The Cambiata - To Heal
Huak - Trajectory
Mt. Moon (led by Jakob Battick; you need to know about his music!) - A Burial in Seven Births
Phantom Buffalo - Take to the Trees

You have a good list there. Haven't listened to a lot of the bands listed, so if I have some extra money by some great fluke, I'll be sure to check them out!

And for best live act, I'd say The Baltic Sea. I was blown away by their performance at their CD release party at Space Gallery back in August.

Bring Grizzly Bear. They're upcoming album is going to be fantastic and lifechanging!

And yes, 1up on the Ben Folds. Seen him twice. He's a wonderful performer!

I'm very excited about the OK Go and Oppenheimer show. Both bands have opened for TMBG in the past, so...book TMBG sometime! (I'm very persistent)

Stereogum.com
Though they've started to post a lot of stupid celebrity news lately, they reveal a lot of new and upcoming bands and often release free mp3s along those articles. They featured South Portland's very own Fire on Fire once and had a download for their song "Hangman".

Please book They Might Be Giants. I beg you! I travel 2 to 3 hours every time they come to Massachusetts, and I'd love it if for once they'd be playing in my backyard. Plus it's been a very long time since they've played Portland. I think last time was 1994 at Zoots.

I think they'd be perfect for the venue too. They typically play venues that fit 700 to 900 people.
