Practicing tips?

December 1, 2008 by dbodoff

Just curious, what kind of practicing tips does anyone have? Does anyone have any cool methods that have discovered to help them get better with their instrument?

Re: username Change??

November 17, 2008 by dbodoff

some of the functionality of our forum is a bit different than what is done normally. We had one or two unique circumstances that these forum were able to work with better than any of the others. The only strange one that effects us is the issue of changing usernames. You would have to create a new profile.

Yeah, that got a little out of hand. But, sometimes brainstorming like this is really good. I say, well done. Good dialogue.

so, I'm thinking it might be a cool idea to branch something like this off of the Portland, Maine Wikipedia page. I mean, that's what it's there for, isn't it? I was just checking it out and that really seems to make the most sense.

You know, a Wiki would probably more appropriate for that. That's something we should think about.

I second that, Sam!! Perhaps the PMF could become the Musician's Lobby!!

this is a great sounding project! Would it inappropriate to share the final product? Just seems like a valuable piece.

Re: MySpace vs Website??

September 14, 2008 by dbodoff

the points that you guys have made here are all the things that it took me a long time to accept. I think, deep down, I was hoping that there would be this big "F the man" movement and all the bands would move to a platform that was more in line with artistic principles. I was a bit younger then, I suppose. What it comes right down to is the MySpace serves a great function for a band. It makes a lot things that were difficult for a band to do online before, a lot easier and with the introduction of MySpace Music many of my current gripes may go away.

But, how does a band reach someone, who is Internet friendly and doesn't use MySpace? If that band only exists within MySpace, then they do force a potential fan to join. And if that potential fan doesn't join MySpace, then have they lost that person? How else do they connect with that person? Believe it or not, there a lot of these people out there.

My only other concern with only existing within MySpace is that it seems to homogenize the artists appearances. And I don't really know where to go with this one. I mean, if a band doesn't have the manpower to create a website, then do they have the manpower to customize their MySpace page?

Re: Why don't more bands and artists take advantage of RSS feeds?

September 8, 2008 by dbodoff

So, the MySpace thing is an interesting wrinkle in to the RSS subject as well. (full disclosure: Sam I'm a geek too), the RSS issue is interesting, and you're correct, sometimes the work/ reward ratio can be a little daunting.

But, I am convinced that things like the show listings from MySpace don't have a feed in order to force people to visit their site. That is, afterall, how they make they're money.

Great idea about the myspace subject. Check it here

MySpace vs Website??

September 8, 2008 by dbodoff

This is a conversation I have had with a number of my friends. It frustrates me to no end. But, I have just recently come around and seen the other side of the argument. I would really like to see why some bands/ artists prefer to only have a MySpace page and not their own website.

Re: Why don't more bands and artists take advantage of RSS feeds?

September 4, 2008 by dbodoff

The easiest way that I can think of to explain RSS is that it will turn a frequently updated portion of a website into a feed. That feed is something to which a person can subscribe.

By subscribing to this feed, the subscriber will be made aware of the updates that occur within that portion of a website. The person who controls the feed can decide what that "awareness" will be.

For example, if I use Google Reader to subscribe to Band X's news feed, when I open Google reader it will display, in chronological order, the news that Band X has been updating.

In my opinion, this can be seen as a service provided to the fans. It is something that makes keeping on top of the happenings of a band easy, even passive, for a fan.

got a little nostalgic there and missed the point of this topic.

I'm just really excited to see another really good room in a cool location who will be able to get good shows to that age group.

I was sooooo psyched to see that the Atmosphere/ Blueprint tour was coming to Portland. Then I saw where it is going to be. I just feel badly for the all ages audiences these days. When I was in high school The Asylum would do all ages, Stone Coast did too, even Granny's did sometimes. Those were, (or are), great rooms. The bands had a real stage, a great sound system. I just can't help but wish those rooms on the all ages audiences of today.

It looks like Port City Music Hall could be a fantastic new place.  The sound system looks like it will be really good and it is in a really fun location too.

Re: Why don't more bands and artists take advantage of RSS feeds?

That's interesting because I too have subscribed to every myspace blog of every band that I am even remotely interested in.  Not because I want to hang out and read blogs all day, but with hope that some will begin using it in a creative way,  I would even welcome count downs to shows.  There's just too many bands, too many people doing interesting things, to keep track otherwise.  It is also too bad that is the only subscribable section of a myspace profile.  It also too bad that bands rely on myspace the way they do.  But I suppose that is for another post...

Why don't more bands and artists take advantage of RSS feeds?

August 28, 2008 by dbodoff

RSS feeds are great because they give an interested person a perfectly passive to keep up to date.  All that interested person has to do is click "subscribe."  I would love to see more bands, (if not EVERY band/ musician), use this for show dates.  For example, let's say band X only plays out every few months.  If I was able to "subscribe" to the their performance schedule, I would be automatically updated without having to go search it out, without having to hear an advertisement.

Re: Is vinyl really better? I mean really, in reality, actually better?

August 5, 2008 by dbodoff

But what about the Blu Ray music discs?  Or that new John Cougar Mellencamp release with new "CODE" process.  The interesting thing about the CODE is that it is on a DVD, so no new required, as long as you have the sound system.  The Blu Ray music discs seem to be a bit of an over kill for now.  But...... I suppose if I had the equipment, why the hell not.  It would probably be a lot of fun.

Oh, in case my question wasn't clear:  Anyone know anything/ have experience with/ or have opinions on both Blu Ray audio and CODE?

Re: Is vinyl really better? I mean really, in reality, actually better?

August 5, 2008 by dbodoff

That's the answer I was looking for.  Even if the records sounded better, I doubt I've got anything to play it back on/ through that would take advantage of that difference in sound.  I too, can't tell the difference between an AAC from iTunes, and MP3 from Amazon or 320 kps imports in to iTunes.  I can definitely hear the difference with a questionable download from BearShare or something like that.

It is really interesting to hear about the process and the way in which it effects the final product.  Makes me feel good to know that I don't have to go buy a "record player" or some wild contraption to play those things on.

BUT, there is definitely something to be said for the whole packaging thing.  Really adds to the experience of the music, in my opinion.

Is vinyl really better? I mean really, in reality, actually better?

August 4, 2008 by dbodoff

So, there was an interesting article in the Sunday paper about the rise in vinyl album sales, (here).  What's the deal?  Is vinyl really a better sounding medium?  I was thinking about getting back in to it, but this quote from the article made me question whether or not it is worth the hassle:

"While vinyl fans say the sound is often warmer than a CD, Ludwig said many, if not most, new vinyl records are made from the same digital master recordings as CDs. So they should sound about the same.

On the other hand, some vinyl records Ludwig has worked on are from master recordings with higher resolution than would be used on a CD, he said."

Any idea?

I'd love to hear a dialogue about Creative Commons.  What it is, how an artist can use it, should an artist use it, upsides, downsides... those kinds of things.

Re: DIY is not just a cool acronym.

I thought that this post from the good fellas at Hypebot was an interesting coutnerpoint to this DIY post.  Obviously, it speaks to an artist who may be at a different level of their career.  But it is always good to see an issue from as many sides as possible, in my opinion.

I've had two good experiences with eBay, believe it or not. Really didn't think that it would be such a great idea. But, I got rid of a nicer electric bass and an old synth pedal. I got pretty much what I wanted for them too.
