My favorite local albums from this year were totally Cougars Kill Cobras and All Night Chemist. Cougars Kill Cobras were a complete surprise for me. I've been looking for something to fill the void left by The Blood Brothers breaking up. As far as non-local, Q-Tip's new album is really good. And who could deny In Rainbows?
No posts received thumbs up, next time you see a good one, give some respect and thumb it up.

most of the people involved with the clubs around town are on Facebook and Twitter too. Wouldn't hurt to catch up with them there too.

Re: Jango- Pay for Play
June 3, 2009 by dbodoff
So, I took some time to think about that, Sam.
And my conclusion is that this is why I love these forums. I NEVER would have come up with that type of reasonable assessment. And, you raise some interesting points. I certainly could imagine a radio station who was entirely pay for play. In my imagination it sounds glorious. Because, you're right, the station would really only benefit from playing music that is actually of interest. That and there would be no, ummmm, let's call them interuptions, (but of course I'm referring to commercials. Not that they're all bad, but that's an entirely different discussion.)
You have successfully changed the tone of my opinion on this topic. I still have a lot of the same concerns. But, generally, not as negative as before.
Jango- Pay for Play
May 6, 2009 by dbodoff
One of the contributors to the Music Think Tank has a piece about Jango and its "pay for play" model. I found the piece relatively interesting and it made think about a few things that I hadn't thought of before.
First of all, isn't the pay for play model essentially illegal on radio? (Radio guys, I know your somewhere on this board, is that a correct statement?) I mean, isn't that payola? And wasn't that a big deal?
Secondly, the idea that this type of activity is subject to different rules than our tradtional media friends, should kind of make artists and bands think about the rules that they are playing by, right? I mean, is it worth the couple hundred bucks on Jango, for example, for a band to raise some awareness and album sales? How about when compared to what a spot schedule is on radio?
Man, it would be crazy if a band were able to geotarget the plays that they have paid for to regions where they were performing. Hmmmmmm, I smell a good old fashioned mash-up here....

I was finally able to get some time to listen to this album. I really enjoyed it. Any words of wisdom for anyone else looking to make their music available for no cost? Have you every considered Creative Commons?

Soooo glad you brought this up in the forum. I'm still working my through this stuff myself. The math is just incredible.
On one hand, when I look at the math as musician, I don't know that the formula really speaks to the way I'd want to communicate with my audience or with the services that are getting my music out there. Just seems like an old school way of determining cost and value.
On the other hand, what do I know about this stuff? Hopefully, after I work my through the data and analysis I've been collecting, I can take part in a more intelligent conversation here.
Re: MySpace vs Website??
March 22, 2009 by dbodoff
You raise a lot of interesting points here. Its a little disappointing that this thread has dormant since 08. Especially, since this is an area where the most people know the smallest amounts.
So, one of the ways that I look at this band vs internet thing is just simply meeting your fans/ audience where they prefer to hang out. This could be Geno's, The River, Javanet, myspace, facebook... What I mean is, maybe you don't have to focus on MySpace and Facebook. But, this is a matter a preference and I would not outright suggest to someone to ignore their myspace page they have one.
The website that you've mentioned which allows you to update all of that information across platforms, is probably the best solution. I predict that we see an explosion of these tools this year. Anothe really useful tool is Ping.Fm. That allows a person to update information across platforms as well. Though, it does not seem to be as robust as artistdata. I'm going to check it out. Probably, should have checked it out before I replied.
There is a real challenge here and it is growing everyday.

judging by the amount of layoffs all over the place, I can only imagine that whatever increase that cost is, it could be just enough to break the camel's back. Maybe Ryan Seacrest could shoulder some of the expense :)
Re: Practicing tips?
February 19, 2009 by dbodoff
using a "click" in practice was always one of my favorite things. determining the bpm was always fun. we could argue about just one or two, even though its barely noticeable at that point.
the coolest thing though, is once the full band is playing together again, CRANKING the click, but then hearing it disappear because everyone is dead on time-wise. just awesome.
Re: Any opinions od this??

I am far too cynical to believe in these companies. They just make me uncomfortable. Who knows, maybe I've missed a lot of really great opportunites in the past because of that.

Just curious, what kind of practicing tips does anyone have? Does anyone have any cool methods that have discovered to help them get better with their instrument?
Re: username Change??
November 17, 2008 by dbodoff
some of the functionality of our forum is a bit different than what is done normally. We had one or two unique circumstances that these forum were able to work with better than any of the others. The only strange one that effects us is the issue of changing usernames. You would have to create a new profile.

Yeah, that got a little out of hand. But, sometimes brainstorming like this is really good. I say, well done. Good dialogue.
Re: Networking Page
October 27, 2008 by dbodoff
so, I'm thinking it might be a cool idea to branch something like this off of the Portland, Maine Wikipedia page. I mean, that's what it's there for, isn't it? I was just checking it out and that really seems to make the most sense.
Re: Networking Page
October 25, 2008 by dbodoff
You know, a Wiki would probably more appropriate for that. That's something we should think about.

Re: MySpace vs Website??
September 14, 2008 by dbodoff
the points that you guys have made here are all the things that it took me a long time to accept. I think, deep down, I was hoping that there would be this big "F the man" movement and all the bands would move to a platform that was more in line with artistic principles. I was a bit younger then, I suppose. What it comes right down to is the MySpace serves a great function for a band. It makes a lot things that were difficult for a band to do online before, a lot easier and with the introduction of MySpace Music many of my current gripes may go away.
But, how does a band reach someone, who is Internet friendly and doesn't use MySpace? If that band only exists within MySpace, then they do force a potential fan to join. And if that potential fan doesn't join MySpace, then have they lost that person? How else do they connect with that person? Believe it or not, there a lot of these people out there.
My only other concern with only existing within MySpace is that it seems to homogenize the artists appearances. And I don't really know where to go with this one. I mean, if a band doesn't have the manpower to create a website, then do they have the manpower to customize their MySpace page?
Re: Why don't more bands and artists take advantage of RSS feeds?
September 8, 2008 by dbodoff
So, the MySpace thing is an interesting wrinkle in to the RSS subject as well. (full disclosure: Sam I'm a geek too), the RSS issue is interesting, and you're correct, sometimes the work/ reward ratio can be a little daunting.
But, I am convinced that things like the show listings from MySpace don't have a feed in order to force people to visit their site. That is, afterall, how they make they're money.

MySpace vs Website??
September 8, 2008 by dbodoff
This is a conversation I have had with a number of my friends. It frustrates me to no end. But, I have just recently come around and seen the other side of the argument. I would really like to see why some bands/ artists prefer to only have a MySpace page and not their own website.
