Quoting detuned from the PCMH thread:
"on a side note, while waiting in line for the bathroom at the show, some dude started talking to me and saying that supposedly the state theater is going to re-open? has anyone heard anything? is there any truth to this?"
This is swirling around the music community. I've heard many different stories. Is this wishful thinking or does anyone have anything concrete. I don't even know whom to call to find out about this anymore. Someone point me in the right direction and I'll dig up the dirt. Meanwhile, I'm making calls.
If so, Congress street is going to explode!
god i hope it comes back. combined with port city, there could be such potential to get so many of the great mid level independent bands that have risen to popularity since its been closed. fingers freakin crossed.
I too keep hearing rumours about this. I have found nothing of substance. It is downright sad that it has been closed for so long.
what was the reason why it closed in the first place? i always heard things about firecode violations or something, but i dont think i heard anything official.
Basically, the company that was renting it and managing it for $10,000 a month wasn't paying rent, so they were evicted. No one has rented it since because of the repair work needed (at least that's the public opinion).
I just looked up the state theater info on the Portland Assessors website and found that at least the ownership hasn't changed in the last few months. The Theater and Office/Retail space entries still list Stone Coast as the owner. Not sure if they could sell it for $5.2m in this market though.

ugh, this is so frustrating
Just a thought... How does one complete and estimated $1M worth of fire code renovations without having a single building permit issued by the City of Portland, or the State Fire Marshalls Office?
Has any one seen large crews of construction workers in and around the State?
just saw that massconcerts bought the webster theatre. i wish they could buy the state :/

Ok so here is the next scoop in the rumor mill. According to Pollstar, Toxic Audio, is scheduled to play the State Theater on 7/27/09. I am pretty sure this is some kind of misprint but if you're really motivated to find out call Toxic Audio's booking agent at Castle Talent. 407.909.9650
Hmmmmm? What/who will be next?
I'm making the call.
who on earth is toxic audio? pollstar can be pretty inaccurate very often so id be inclined to think its a mistake. (hell, they still think overcast is playing the asylum on nov 14th, when it was actually nov 14 LAST year)
Form my end I have heard that Mass Concerts is serious considering.
Just spoke with Toxic Audio's booker Ron, and he says they're not playing the State Theatre in July.
They're actually in Brunswick at the Maine State Music Theatre, on the Bowdoin College Campus, on July 27. So, yeah, Pollstar can get things wrong sometimes. It was worth a call, though.
Form my end I have heard that Mass Concerts is serious considering.
