Hi everyone - I got the idea for doing this from another forum I'm on. I just joined last night, so...

My name is Josh and I'm not a musician. I can't play anything and even struggle at tapping a spoon on a coffee cup with any rhythm. I'm a writer by heart, maintaining four separate blogs (mainly sports) and music has always played a major role in my life. I used to be the 'dj' for a pro hockey team in New Hampshire, so I've rocked some crowds in my day!

I am originally from the Oxford Hills area and recently moved to Portland after being laid off from my marketing job in Manchester, NH, back in July. I'm out there looking for work, but loving the fact I'm here and back in a vibrant creative community. Last night's Radio/Internet marketing session was what brought me in and I'm happy to be a member.

So, who are you?

Hey Josh, thanks for joining up and starting this topic. Great idea.

I remember a Sontiago point from one of our first ed sessions: Never assume people know who you are. So, for the sake of contributing to the discussion, I'm Sam, I'm the music writer for the Phoenix (and have been since 1999), I'm the guitarist and singer for the Grassholes, a bluegrass band that plays around the state fairly often, and I'm the secretary and a founding member of the Portland Music Foundation.

All I'm really here for is to dispel some of the mystery around the music industry. It's really not that hard, but people don't have a great resource for finding out how you get your song played or reviewed, etc., and we hope the PMF can be that great resource.

Hey Josh, Sam, and everyone else. Wednesday was the first PMF session I've attended, and at Pat's encouragement (and as a fan of forums in general), I've been inspired to join up. So..

My name is Kyla, I'm a singer and guitarist within spitting distance of releasing my first EP, which I've been recording with Eric Bettencourt for almost a year. I've been preoccupied with this notion that I shouldn't try to get into the local "scene" until the record is finished, but I'm starting to (trying to) shed that skin and get some dirt under my nails. Aside from playing music I'm also a team leader at 2-1-1 Maine, the state's hotline for social services information.

I joined PMF a couple of months ago but unfortunately I work most Wednesday nights and have missed out on all the ed sessions until this week. Definitely game for forum chat though..

Josh - sorry to hear about getting laid off, but I'll bet you had some fun jockeying for the Freeze. I grew up in Amherst and spent plenty of my youth trolling Manchvegas. ;)

Hi, I'm the other, beard-free, Sam. I did the SEO section of the web 101 seminar.

I'm one of those guys who does a bit of everything.

My real job is computer support for Criterium Engineers - I support all of our 60+ affiliate offices and build/administer their websites.

I also do a bit of consulting on the side, for all sorts of clients, from computer repair to helping develop web strategies.

I volunteer as the Technical Director at the St Lawrence Arts & Community Center, on the top of Munjoy Hill. If you're ever up to a concert there, you'll probably see me in the booth. I've been involved in local music since I was a teenager, running events with Maine Arts (for those who remember them).

And, of course, I'm a photographer, which is how most PMF people know me. Check me out on flickr.

For me, the PMF is about community building. Artists and musicians bring a certain amount of life to an area. And by improving that, we make the area a little bit better place to live. And I like it here.

Herb Ivy, when talking about radio promo, said "It's all about the song."  I would instead say that it's all about the experience. (I would point out KISS as a perfect example of this.)  For my part as a photog, when someone sees one of my photos, it's nice to hear "Wow", but I'd rather hear "Man, I wish I'd been there!"

My only bit of advice is: Don't try to do everything at once.  Try to do too much at once, and you'll just get frustrated and give up. I've built enough failed websites to learn that lesson. There are no secret formulas or magic bullets. Take on one thing at a time and build up.

Hey, everyone

I'm Cam. I'm 18. Born and raised in Portland.
I'm in several musical acts (one associated with the Maine Academy of Modern Music) each of which have their own genre. I also do the singer songwriter thing.
I've been a PMF since the beginning. I think its just what the Portland music scene needs and I'm really excited to see whats in store for the rest of the year.

Hey Guys and Gals -

My name is Todd Richard, but most people call me the Rocket. I'm a performing and producing drummer, percussionist and DJ. I play with Miss Fairchild, the Sumner McKane Group, and do lots of session work. I have DJ residencies at the White Heart, and am the official DJ for the Maine Roller Derby League (yeah Josh!)

I am a co-founder of wepushbuttons, a community organization that advocates for and supports the electronic and hip hop music community here in Maine, as well as reaching out to show the rest of the world how fresh Portland is for music.

I'm a trustee of the PMF, and I also helped found the Maine Academy of Modern Music with my good friend Jeff Shaw.

Incidentally, I had tried to get a meeting with Jeff Shaw for months to talk about working together. But, it wasn't until we sat down at a conference table together at our first PMF meeting that we actually met face to face. And, we were off from there.. So, PMF brings people together. Seriously.

Great to see you here, Cam, and thanks Josh for starting this thread...

Hey All,

I am Adam Ayan, mastering engineer at Gateway Mastering Studios here in Portland, PMF co-founder and board of directors member, as well as part time faculty member at the USM School of Music.

I started out as a rabid music fan as a kid, which naturally led to me becoming a musician (bass player), and following a career path starting at UMass Lowell as a music/sound recording technology major. Since then mastering has been my primary career/musical focus, and creative outlet.

I moved to Portland over 10 years ago after being hired as an engineer at Gateway, and have always been inspired by the Portland music scene and it's wealth of talent as well as it's real sense of community. I support music in all forms, and hope that the PMF offers some knowledge and support to our local music community.

Hi all I'm Justin from The Loups, we've played a few shows with the Cambiata, Daro, KidNapKin, Kesera, Radiation Year, Loverless and just finished our first EP "Holding Hands with the Crooked Man" recorded by Micah Davis at The Halo. Most of it can be heard at www.myspace.com/theloups and we should be getting it into Bull Moose in the next couple weeks. Found this forum through myspace and really think its going to be a much tighter nit network then myspace, and joined to hopefully network with other bands, set shows up, and get some contacts to help better promote the release of this EP. Any help and direction is great, any shows that need a band please message us, we're pretty down to play all the time, just love to play our music. Nice to meet you all

Ayo Everyone!

I'm Josh Thelin. I am a production engineer at Gateway Mastering, as an assistant to Adam Ayan and Bob Ludwig.

I am originally from Maine and have returned after college. I went to Gettysburg College (PA) and graduated with an "Independent" major which I created. It consisted of a combination of music theory, music history which I gathered from Gettysburg and then a year at American University ("abroad") working/studying in their Music Technology program. So, I ended up graduating from Gettysburg with the major I created called "Modern Music Production" and a minor in Art History.

I am now working at Gateway and continuing my hobby/side job has a producer (Hip Hop/Downtempo/Electronic). I continue to produce HipHop for others and my own solo projects. I have been DJ'ing (scratch/turntablist) for about 8-9 years now and have been producing for about the same amount of time. I started in music as a saxophone player (about 17 years ago) studying jazz and added "turntables/DJ'ing" roughly out of high school...

Good to meet everyone here so far!

- Josh T.
